In every site, 'Serif' is showed 'Sans-Serif'.

I have some 'Serif' fonts in my system.

And not change font settings in [Preferences -> Content -> Fonts & Colors]

Firefox choose 'Sans Serif' -> 'Cantarell' to show 'Serif'

And choose 'Serif' -> 'Alegreya' to show some unknown font

I read here that there are some issues with the fontconfig and that it could be customized: http://www.infinality.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=222

However have you chosen these defaults with in Firefox and checked to not allow websites to choose their fonts: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/change-fonts-and-colors-websites-use

Did you check the font settings in gnome-appearance-properties ?
