The app tabs set up easily, but do not reappear when Firefox is reopened.

Creating app tabs is simple. However, they do not reappear the next time you start up Firefox. That means you have to recreate them each time Firefox is started up. The instructions say they reappear each time Firefox is started and only disappear when unpinned.

They seem to have worked without fail for me, even though it is not the type of thing that I would choose to count on. But I wipe them out anyway and start over because I may have opened bookmarks in the same app-tab.

Closing all tabs closes app-tabs too, which I prefer after working with them in this manner.

I bookmarked those I wanted for a task together, six of them, placed that as folder with a folder name of one character (underscore) on the bookmarks toolbar.

  1. Close all tabs
  2. right click on bookmark folder, Open All in Tabs
  3. Select the first 5 of the 6 (Multiple Tab Handler), then pin them all at once (again MTH)

This way they are documented in my bookmarks and easy to change.

Just realized I want them in a certain order, because they are app-tabs and I sort all of my bookmarks periodically with the SortPlaces extensions so I just numbered their titles.

I could have put a bookmark separator between each instead, which protects them from sorting as each would be within a separator group. Looks fine in menu drop down, but a bit odd looking in the bookmarks sidebar where it doubles the screen space.

I need step by step instructions on how to keep my App Tabs as they supposedly were to be available until I unpinned it or them. Ed Weidman

Well supposedly is not all that clear cut.

App-tabs are considered part of browsing history so you must save your browsing history for app-tabs to work. Tools > Options > Privacy you must have "Remember my browsing history" and in Settings where check marks mean to clear things you must leave unchecked "Browsing history". Annotated picture:

Do not include you home page in your app-tabs they are two different things. If you did include your home page in your app0-tabs you would have two copies in your tabs bar.

To create a app-tab right click on the tab and choose "pin tab". If you have an extension like "Multiple Tab Handler" you can can select several tabs at once and pin them at once.

If you don't trust supposedly, and I sure don't, then bookmark all of your app-tabs to a bookmark folder so you will be able to recreate them again but opening the folder into tabs and then making those tabs app-tabs.

I already indicated in my first reply the problems you may have by closing them or in opening another page from the same site. Pages from other sites will open in another tab from bookmarks and from links. Pages identified in the AwesomeBar will open in the currently active tab no matter what as the Ctrl and Shift keys do nothing for items in the AwesomeBar. Use of CCleaner will remove app-tabs, I don't use it, but it is the cause of some complaints.

Tabs:

I don't include app-tabs in the following but you will probably learn a lot more about tabbed browsing then the above articles, which are restricted on what can be included, and who they are addressed too. There are no such restrictions on my own web pages.

App (pinned) tabs and Tab Groups (Panorama) are stored as part of the session data [1] in the file sessionstore.js [2] in the Firefox profile folder [3].

Make sure that you do not use "Clear Recent History" to clear the "Browsing History" when Firefox is closed because that prevails and prevents Firefox from opening tabs from the previous session.
