Hi bradavon, with respect to those preferences:

(1) browser.download.useToolkitUI - this is an old preference that may linger if it has a nondefault value, just as the preferences for uninstalled add-ons may linger. It does not exist in new installations of Firefox and has no effect.

(2) browser.download.panel.shown - the first time the user downloads in Firefox 20+, the panel associated with the arrow on the toolbar opens automatically to cue the user as to where they can find downloads. Then this is set to true and that doesn't happen again.

(3) browser.download.panel.firstSessionCompleted - some internal purpose I don't understand

(4) browser.download.manager.showWhenStarting, browser.download.manager.showAlertOnComplete, and browser.download.manager.retention - these don't do anything in the desktop version of Firefox as far as I know. They might be relevant to one of the other versions (Android or FirefoxOS).

browser.download.manager.retention - This used to work prior to Firefox 20. I believe it's now ignored :-(

All download prefs that were for the classic Downloads Manager will no longer work now that the new Downloads Manager is used and support for the classic Downloads Manager has been removed. You can reset such prefs if they appear bold (user set) via the right-click context menu. The browser.download.manager.retention pref used to specify what and when to keep downloads in the Downloads Manager. The new Downloads Manager treats download items as history and you can no longer let download items expire automatically.

The fact that all the old prefs are still in the client and/or don't work with the new 'download manager' shows quite a lot about the development team..

I use DownThemAll addon. It can show a corrupt download. For our staffs, I switch back to v25. Since they always have problem with download incomplete.

Control + J does nothing. However, I still have the About:config preference for toolkitUI, and changed it. I then customized to put the old button back up on the menubar (rather than navigation bar) and it works the "old" way fine. How? I have Status4Evar installed! I highly reccomend it, you get the functionality back in the add-on bar (yes, another sticking point for me, when they removed the functionality of the lower (now hidden) bar, replacing it with the chrome-like flashing popup (unusable) when you hovered over links, etc. As to Firefox and Chrome merging: Chrome already "ATE" Opera, which was a much better browser than we have now. Expect bad weather.

Hi misha530@hotmail.com, Control + J is the keyboard shortcut for Windows. If you are running Windows and it doesn't work, another feature may have taken over that shortcut. If you are not running Windows, you can use Help > Keyboard Shortcuts to learn the combination to open the download list on your OS.

It is Ctrl + Shift + Y for Linux users as can be seen in Tools menu.

The Firefox browser is not going to change from Gecko to Blink anytime so you do not have to worry in thinking Firefox will take the same path that Opera took.

I don't use keyboard shortcuts anyway. I only tried that because I saw it here. It's not clearly marked, as a matter of fact, opening the dialog box when you click the button says that the shortcut is "S" WHO would try ctrl shift Y, anyway, that's just not intuitive. *I see it does work though I'll never remember it. MORE STICKY PADS on my screen just to figure out how my computer is supposed to work, when it could just work, the way it used to. Thanks anyway guys.

Hello, I registered to this forum only to write this request. Please bring back that simple download pop up window (without bookmarks), to the greatest browser on the net - Firefox. All my colleagues thinking the same way and there is five of us. It was really useful (it prevented from accidental downloads, etc.). If you think that it is better without, just do a thick box in options menu for people to be able to choose themselves how they like it best. Thank you.

If you prefer the old download manager, the best solution that I've come across thus far is to subscribe to the esr (extended support release) version of firefox.

Using this version (24.2.0) will allow you access to security updates and should preserve the old download manager that previously worked for you. I should also not require an add-on either.

Lizard, Yep, I installed that. Had to figure out HOW first on Linux of course. Found a .deb installer that did the trick, then locked version. Thanks. John, not willing to jump through hoops and hurdles to change it if it's not showing correctly. It SHOULD show, and does on my screen, as "Fixitman." Email is set to not public, on purpose. Thanks. (Fixitman) For some reason had showed as Misha, no clue why.

I think "accidentally exiting Firefox and cancelling downloads, and the extra click to view the progress bars" are fairly superficial problems compared to the inability to use add-ons that integrate themselves only into the old UI, such as the MD5 Reborned Hasher: http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/md5-reborned-hasher/

Hi O. R. Mapper, there are several extensions which integrated with the old download manager dialog that will need to be rewritten to work with the new way downloads are listed in Firefox 20 and higher. If they haven't been rewritten by now, someone might need to help the author out with it. (Someone more knowledgeable than me.)

Gonna have to give Chrome a look now, all it really needs in my eyes is a decent theme (Few people actually like the bright white / blue theme).

O. R. Mapper: You consider 'A large download off a server that does not support resuming downloads', 'Downloading from a server that has access restrictions', 'Downloading from a secure server that you have to jump through a ton of hoops just to reach your download', or just general 'I didn't realize I had canceled the download because the last decade of my life I could just close the main window and the download would continue' are considered superficial? Any update has the potential to break addons for seemingly any reason, but a little compatibility layer between two different download managers would make everyone happy in this case.

The lack of a separate Downloads window killed Firefox for me. If I have a big download, I have to keep a browser window open until it's complete. I don't always have a positive sign the download has even begun -- on a larger monitor, I may not notice the icon flash. And let's say I have several tabs open and I go to close the browser -- I may accidentally spam the ENTER key, forgetting it's going to ask about the download still running. I intended to close all my tabs. I didn't intend to cancel my download.

Thanks, Mozilla. Great to see you've taken Apple's approach of "We know what's best for you, just change your needs to fit what we say". Wasn't the separate download manager one of your old selling points compared to Internet Explorer? Is it really that much of a hassle to offer two different download management methods? Let the user select whether they want an inline downloader or an external window? One of your points on the new method was "The old list got longer and longer to render as the history grew bigger". That's why we have a CLEAR LIST button.

Do not switch to Chrome, that is exactly what Mozilla and Google are wishing and looking forward to. Making Firefox more and more worse so the transit to Google Chrome is more easy and painless.

Switch instead to Cyberfox or Pale Moon since both are Firefox modifications and keep the old download manager window and refuse in becoming Chrome 2 like Firefox will with Australis. A much better option :)

Interesting point about the "history" of downloads. If they weren' t included in "history" and you could pick how many you wanted to save the "history" of, the list wouldn't get over, say, 20, or 40 (the way it used to be.) And yes, the clear history button was quite useful for those who really didn't want to see it. The option not to close the browser when closing the last tab was (is, it's still there) useful as well, and closing the browser didn't close the downloads, if I recall, because it was in a separate window. The browser engine didn't actually stop, in other words, if an active download window was present. If you then noticed a download completed, you could either open a new browser instance, or simply close the download window, stopping the browser. If I recall, there was an option to close the window when the download was complete, or leave it open, as well. That's why "about:config" was (and is) useful for advanced users. Could we not, at least, leave the options available to do it the "old way?"
