After installing Firefox 6 it disables java 6.0.26 and says "not compatible...". The last version ov java is 1.6.0.26 which is what most users use. What is the solution?

This morning I installed Firefox 6 and it says that it is not compatible with Java Console 6.0.26 and it is disabled. I am using Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. Is this normal?

Chosen solution

The "Java Console" add-on is only needed if you are a programmer writing Java code that runs in Firefox. Otherwise, this add-on is not useful. Disabling it will not affect web pages that use Java.

You can re-enable and test disabled add-ons by installing the Firefox Add-on Compatibility Reporter. I've used this tool before and found that it may be necessary to close and re-start Firefox a few times after installing ACR in order to turn off the add-on compatibility checking in Firefox. Just check your Add-on Manager (Tool | Add-ons) and ACR will tell you if a Firefox re-start is necessary.

The downside of using ACR is that it will re-enable extensions that could be legitimately incompatible with FF6. After you've determined which add-on is causing your problems and/or after FF6-compatible versions of all your add-ons are released, I would advise disabling ACR and letting Firefox's built-in add-on compatibility checking perform its normal function.

Edit: Apologies to r31b3n who first suggested installing the ACR here in this thread back on August 16th. If this suggestion helps you , be sure to give r31b3n the credit.

... and if you want to test the upcoming Java 7.0 JRE release, you can download both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions from www.FileHippo.com.

I installed the 32-bit version of Java 7.0 (v. 1.7.0.147) and it didn't re-enable my Java Console extension, but my Secunia PSI security software now reports that this update has patched a known security hole in my IE and Firefox browsers.

What kind of a company would take a good product like Fire Fox 3.6 and then mess around with it and have version 4, (bad) then version 5, (will not start), version 6 ( it went straight to 7). Oh, I know, remember in 1985 when then genus at Coca-Cola, said lets change the formula of Coke the public is going to like it! Did that guy, Donald Keough go to work for Fire Fox?

Firefox 6.0 would not give users a update to a 7.0 Beta build unless they were Testing a 6.0 Beta build (there were five 6.0 Betas) and not the 6.0 final release.

Hi goodtyneguy:

If you're certain the disabled Java Console extension is the problem, see the Oracle Support article How Do I Enable and View the Java Console?. This article explains how to open the Java Console if you need to use it. Do your trading charts work correctly when the Java Console is open? If not, then your financial site may require Flash or some other add-on that is not working correctly.

There is also a Java article on the mozilla.org site here that may be of interest. Under the heading Java Console Disabled it states "Note: Starting with Java 6 Update 10, the Java Console menu item in Firefox ("Tools -> Java Console") and SeaMonkey 2 ("Tools -> Web Development -> Java Console") is nonfunctional and no longer opens the Java Console. This is by design."

Have you tried r31b3n`s suggestion of August 16th to install the Firefox Add-on Compatibility Reporter to force the Java Console extension to enable? This is the recommended solution in the Firefox Support article Add-ons are Disabled After Updating.

Thanks for your reply Imacri, my charting software was working fine until the firefox update and has been for months. When I initially got the notification of the upgrade and allowed it, I got a message saying the partial upgrade did not work and the application gave me the choice to upgrade fully which I accepted. OH I WISH I HAD IGNORED IT!! Since my post above I have uninstalled ff and went to reinstall ff 5 which I have the executable on my hard drive. Now when double clicking on that it begins executing but fails to do anything after I have clicked on the dialogue box which asks if I want to run as the administrator or current user. So basically MOZILLA HAVE SCREWED WITH MY COMPUTER! So now I am stuck. THANK YOU MOZILLA

Imacri:

I have windows XP. Using Vista I think you have only to find in the main folder where you have the installed Programs the Mozilla Firefox folder and then the Extension subfolder. There you'll find a sub-subfolder named CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0026-ABCDEFFEDCBA for Java 6.0.26 version or CAFEEFAC-0017-0000-0000-ABCDEFFEDCBA for Java 7.0 version. That sub-subfolder contains the plugin file Install that you have to edit changing the number of the maxVersion.

P.S.: The Install file is not a XML file! It is a RDF file. So you can open it with a browser, but if you want to edit it you have to use a Text Editor.

I have showing several Java consoles disabled. 6.0.21, .22, 23 etc. Why can't I just remove the old ones?

It's a serious security vulnerability/flaw in Java, please run a security check of your browser https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ This is the result of my check (I'm using Chrome now)

"Installed Version: 1.6.0_27 Latest Version: 1.6.0.27 The latest version of this plugin has a known critical vulnerability, but there is no fix available yet from the vendor. Please exercise CAUTION when using the plugin. You can check back periodically and Qualys BrowserCheck will advise you when the vendor delivers a fixed version.

Suggested Solution: Do not open untrusted files."

I wonder whether Oracle have disabled the running of Java Virtual Machine until the find a fix? See here http://blog.acrossecurity.com/2011/07/binary-planting-goes-any-file-type.html

I have suffered from the "out of memory". I wonder if I could sue Oracle for damages, anyone for a class action law suit :-)

Hi mrag:

According to the article here in the MozillaZine knowledge base, uninstalling Java will remove the Java Console extension but updating over an older version will cause the console extensions to accumulate in Firefox.

I've pasted a paragraph from that article below but there's more information in the article on how to manually delete the old consoles if the instructions below don't work.

Multiple Java Console Extensions

Starting in Firefox 3.6, a "Java Console <version>" extension will appear in the Firefox "Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions" list for each Java version installed (previous to Firefox 3.6, these extensions were hidden). Uninstalling Java should remove the Java Console. Updating Java 6 Update 10 or later will remove the previous Java version but may not uninstall the Java Console for that version, causing Firefox to accumulate multiple Java Console extensions. You can uninstall all Java Console extensions from the Firefox Extensions list, since this extension is obsolete and has no function (see below). On Windows, if the uninstall button to remove the Java Console extension is "greyed-out" or missing, exit Firefox, reopen Firefox from the context (right-click) menu "Run as Administrator" option, then try again.

I posted instructions in this thread on August 19th (page 1) on how to use the free Revo Uninstaller to clean out remnants of your old Java installations that may be helpful. I follow these general steps every time a new Java version is released.

If you want to remove the older Java Console extensions, you have simply to delete in Programs (or Program files)\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0026-ABCDEFFEDCBA (for Java 6.0.26 version and the same numbers for the other numbers of the other Java versions) the RDF file named Install.

Hi noghere:

Thanks for the additional info. I found the install.rdf file for Java 7.00 (v. 1.7.0.0) on my Win Vista 32-bit machine at C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{CAFEEFAC-0017-0000-0000-ABCDEFFEDCBA}\install.rdf and was able to view the contents by opening the file in Notepad. Very slick!

Hi Imacri,

Change the number of maxVersion from 5.0+ to 6.0+ using Notepad and you'll have the Java console extension working.

Hi noghere:

I'm not really worried if the Java Console extension is disabled in FF6, since it doesn't seem to serve any useful purpose in my Firefox browser. I'm happy as long as my Java plugins are working when I test them with the Java Installation Tester.

However, your solution to edit the max Firefox version in the install.rdf file is a good solution for people who want to test to see if the disabled extension is the reason a web page is not displayed correctly, or if they're just annoyed seeing that disabled extension every time they open their Firefox Add-on Manager.

Imacri,

Why don't you try it? It's so simple and you can always come back to the original not working version of the Install file. Before editing make a back_up copy of it if you want. Anyway I think it's better to have the Java console extension working...

NICE JOB, Amanda - This was the exact solution I needed! Disabling ALL of my Add-ons and extensions restored Firefox's ability to upload graphics again. In my case, I discovered the problem was with some miscellaneous add-on that I'm certain only a very few people are using. Other add-ons I have that do not seem to be contributing to the problem (of not being able to upload graphics) are: ColorZilla, Ghostery, Google's Advertising Cookie Opt-Out, NoScript and SEO Quake.
