Firefox is crashing every time I try to download and/or save something. Happens in Safe Mode.

(Same thing is happening in Chrome, but not in Edge).

Are these the most recent incidents? I'm having trouble connecting these dots:

Dec. 15, Firefox 64.0 -- "AsyncShutdownTimeout | Places Connection shutdown | PlacesUtils read-only connection closing as part of Places shutdown" -- this sounds like a shutdown crash and not something that would have occurred in the midst of browsing.

Nov. 15, Firefox 63.0.1 -- "IPCError-browser | ShutDownKill" -- the crashing thread seems to end with NtReadFile and ReadFile, so this sounds disk-related.

Nov. 6, Firefox 63.0.1 -- "IPCError-browser | ShutDownKill" -- the crashing thread seems to be performing memory operations.

If you are getting the Windows crash dialog instead of the Mozilla Crash dialog, there might be relevant data in the Windows event viewer.

Several of the reports show a problem with avast! Update avast! If the problem continues, disable it.

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Look for, and remove any Mozilla or Firefox program folders. Do not remove the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

Do Not remove any profile folders.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

@jscher2000 I just loaded the log links that came up. That’s what was there. I haven’t been using Firefox much over the past month because of the crashing issues. I can crash it a few times in a row and see what logs it generates, if that helps.

I don't get any crash dialogue at all. Firefox just closes (as does Chrome). If I want to check Windows logs how do I do that?

@FredMcD. I'll try these and see what happens.

In that case, I don't think you will find crash data anywhere.

Could you open an additional window after starting Firefox? For example, press Ctrl+n. You can just leave that to the side or minimized. The idea is to see whether something is closing your main window, but leaves that one open. To recover a closed window, you can use either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+n
  • "3-bar" menu button > Library > History > Recently Closed Windows
  • "Library" toolbar button > History > Recently Closed Windows

Opened a 2nd window. Both windows crashed when I tried to save. Both window reopened when I reopened Firefox.

FredMcD. I tried deleting the Mozilla Firefox folder from Program Files (x86) but it's telling me that files in that folder are open or in use so they can't be deleted. As far as I know I had closed everything (except background programs like my virus software, printer, etc.) Anyways, I can't delete the folder.

Still crashing.

WIndows 10 Pro x64 Firefox 64.0

Getting the same problem here with Firefox and Chrome, though Firefox is much worse. Neither pops up a crash report window. Both browsers offer to restore tabs afterwards.

In Firefox, trying to download something is guaranteed to crash. Trying to export bookmarks 100% crashes it too. Telling it to restart with add-ons disabled also crashes every time, and doesn't manage to disable add-ons. I've manually disabled all add-ons, but the problem remains.

You may have ad/mal-ware. Further information can be found in this article; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware?cache=no

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Definitely not malware. Mine is a fresh install of Windows on a new system.

Every time it happens I get this in the Windows error log. SFC says everything is OK. I don't have any AV or anto-malware software installed.

I'm suspecting this may be a Windows 10 issue. Basically the only browser that's functioning properly is Edge. Even IE is crashing.

On the Window forums it looks like there are lots of issue with browsers crashing on Windows. Often .dll files seem to be suspected, although again nobody seems to have a clear solution.

I may just break down, get my computer wiped and start over ;(

Unless anyone has something else I can try.

I think It's definitely a Windows 10 issue. I had the problem with Firefox, Chrome and uTorrent. It was happening constantly with each of them

Though, for me, the problem suddenly went away entirely. No issues with any of them for 4 or 5 days now. I made no changes to my system.
