Firefox import tool does not work to import browser history from either Chrome or Edge.

Hello,

I've been trying to use Firefox's import tool to import my browser history from Chrome after an infuriating update to G Suite broke sync between my devices (read more here: https://www.reddit.com/r/gsuite/comments/qc3nq8/your_organization_requires_a_profile/). To continue to keep sync between devices I would have to create a new user profile in Chrome which does not bring over any existing history. I am a one account G Suite user that only uses it for a custom email domain so these policy changes do not help me whatsoever.

Instead of having to keep dealing with Chrome I want to move to Firefox and take my browser history (along with bookmarks and passwords which worked) with me. However, even after moving all my history to Edge to see if that would work, neither importing my Browsing History from Chrome or Edge into Firefox would work at all. It just does nothing. I have exported my Chrome history with the help of an extension, into both csv and json formats, but I have yet to find a way to import with either of those files into Firefox. Is this an ongoing issue or is there something I'm missing here?

Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, Firefox doesn't have a method to import a CSV or JSON file, so the feature to import from another browser is your best bet.

Could you test in a fresh, unmodified Firefox profile? That's not ideal, obviously, but just to see whether it works there with either Edge or Chrome:

New Profile Test

This takes about 3 minutes, plus the time to try the import.

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

Take a quick glance at the page and make a mental note of which Profile has this notation: This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted. That is your current default profile.

Click the "Create a New Profile" button, then click Next. Assign a name like Jan2022, ignore the option to relocate the profile folder, and click the Finish button.

Firefox will switch your default profile to the new one, so click the Set as Default Profile button for your regular one to avoid an unwanted surprise at your next startup.

Scroll down to Jan2022 and click its Launch profile in new browser button.

Firefox should open a new window that looks like a brand new, uncustomized installation. (Your existing Firefox window(s) should not be affected.) Please ignore any tabs enticing you to connect to a Sync account or to activate extensions found on your system to get a clean test.

Can Firefox import from Edge or Chrome into this clean database?

When you are done with the experiment, you can close the extra window without affecting your regular Firefox profile. (Jan2022 will remain available for future testing.)
