When I open Thunderbird I get "sending of message failed" error messages due to server timeout, even though I didn't attempt to send anything.
When I open Thunderbird I get two messages indicating sending of message failed due to SMTP server connection timeout. I HADN'T TRIED TO SEND ANYTHING! What is T'bird trying to send as soon as I open it? I have nothing held in the Outbox, and only one unfinished mail in Drafts.

About Thunderbird
Thunderbird is an open source desktop email client which supports SMTP, IMAP and POP3 protocols.
These protocols help the user to configure and access their data from online service providers like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Rediff mail etc.
It is also responsible to send or receive emails from external source.
Reasons of Thunderbird message failure
If you have some technical knowledge then this problem is not so difficult. In any other perspective, if there is no technical knowledge, then we will solve your query here. Let’s see the following points, which depend on “Thunderbird Sending of Message Failed SMTP Timed Out”.
When configuring a new account profile or updating Thunderbird. No longer support, when ISP detects spam or virus on port 25. Block sending emails due to Antivirus or Windows Firewall. SSL/TLS server is not set.
Misguide or wrong fill the SMTP port at the time of configuration. Follow These Solutions To Resolve “Thunderbird Sending Of Message Failed SMTP Timed Out”
Thunderbird is not using any proxy to send mail through an antivirus application.
Check for the latest version of Thunderbird update or update to the latest version.
Download any network monitoring or analysis tool like Wireshark, NetworkMiner etc. to test network traffic before sending outgoing messages.
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/updating-thunderbird (It shows correct mailing in safe modus, than a virus programvirus is maybe the interfering source.)
Switch off your antivirus or Windows firewall and try sending the mail again. If Thunderbird was blocked by them, then it will work. Re-check the server or SMTP port connection and assigned right port if it is not set. OR change the Thunderbird SMTP server port and check TLS/SSL server setting.

Sample Of Configure With POP Or IMAP
For POP
Informing: Host name: pop3.domain
server port: 995
Outgoing: Host name: smtp.domain
server port: 465
For IMAP
Incoming: Host name: imap.domain
server port: 993 or 143
Outgoing: Host name: smtp.domain
server port: 25 or 465
That s it for your troubleshooting.
That automatic sending mails will disappear after doing this.
If not try to restart Thunderbird in safe modus.

Thank you for your information. However this does not solve the problem. This did not happen until I upgraded to T'bird ver. 60.9.1 a week or two ago. I have been using the same POP configuration and antivirus settings for many years with no problem. My question is, what is T'bird trying to send? I am not actively sending ANYTHING; I merely opened Thunderbird to read my mail, NOT send anything! All incoming and outgoing emails work fine, despite the failure message. Since send and recv both work OK I can ignore the messages. I just don't want T'bird taking it upon itself to send something that I DID'T SEND.
Hello there Bmbran..
It looks like if you have used everything that I have sent you does not help or functions as you would like .Then I would delete the relevant piece of software.Again reinstall Thunderbird , install your antivirus program to check. Delete all odd software from your computermachine with a good program cleaner/deletesoftware.
