When I type a name into the Thunderbird address bar, I am automatically offered full e-mail addresses that have been associated with that name in the past, but sometimes some of them are obsolete and I would like to delete them from Thunderbird's memory. I can't make out how to do this.

Thunderbird has its own 'Address Book' and access is located on the 'Mail Toolbar' toolbar.

however, a MAC can choose to use the MAC address book. There is a menu item: File -> Use Mac OS X Address Book, but you may have to also allow TB access in OSX settings. System Preferences - Security & Privacy - Privacy You'll find a check box where you have to allow Thunderbird to access "Contacts". Now your Mac OS X Address Book should be visible in TB's address book (or at least in the "File" menu).

I believe the mac address book may only be edited by that application and not via Thunderbird.

So it does depend upon which one you have chosen to use.

But there is no memory etc. Those email addresses are stored in an address book whichever one you are using.

Thunderbird locates email addresses that are in your Address Books. There is no special memory. So those email addresses are still in at least one of your address books.

Click on 'Address Books' select 'All Address Books' Make sure the column header 'Address Book' is visible. Make sure the column header 'Additional Email' is visible. select to sort by 'Email' as it helps to locate when all sorted alphabetically. Scroll down until you locate the incorrect email address. It will also tell you which address book it resides in.

Check out the contact in the appropriate address. Does that contact need deleting because you have added them in another location with correct email address ?

Perhaps the contact has two email addresses and one is wrong, so you need to update the Contact details.

Sorry, I probably should have said that I use a Mac. There is no directory or application "Address Books" so far as I can find. There is an application Contacts which stores e-mail addresses I have deliberately put in it, but the problem ones are addresses that some aspect of the system has harvested on its own initiative from incoming e-mails in the past. I can't make out where they are stored or how I can monitor them.
