Google Maps not loading in FireFox 57

Like my favorite WebBrowser, FIreFox, I depend on Google Maps for dependable and reliable information (most of the time). I am comfortable with it's features and interface. I have saved a Bookmark on my Bookmark Menu for ease in getting to the Website. Avter updating to FireFox 57, neither maps.google.com nor www.google.come/maps will oad, or provide any error message ... I just get a blank screen. This is unacceptable !! What settings or add-ons do I need to get Google Maps to load ?

Thanks DASlondon for the suggestion. It appears the latest version of FoxClocks (Ver 4.7.2) has resolved it's interference with Google Maps, and apparently defaults to NO TRANSFORM.

Hello,

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache. Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to. To clear cache and cookies do the following:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu, choose History, and then "Clear Recent History...".
  2. Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
  3. Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
  4. From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
  5. Now click the "Clear Now" button.

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block (wanted) content (e.g. Adblock Plus, NoScript, Ghostery, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block (wanted) content.

  • make sure your extensions and filters are updated to the latest version

Thanks to <Tyler Downer> for the instructions on clearing history, cookies and cache. I typically (pre FF 57), clear all history and cache when closing FF, and allow cookies only a specific sites. This action did not fix my problem.

Thanks to <cor-el> for the suggestion on add-ons. I use both AdBlock and NoSripts, and have updated to the latest compatible add-ons for FF 57, and also ensured they retained my previous settings for my commonly visited websites. This action did not fix my problem.

And thanks to <jscher2000> for asking about the rl specification. No, it makes no difference. BTW, I typically use HTTPS url's. This also did not fix the problem.

You didn't try disabling them as part of your testing?

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the option/alt key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

Hi Jscher2000 ... Thanks for the suggestion.... I actually just restarted FF in SAFE MODE and Google Maps opens as expected. Being that it is after 11PM, I'm going to continue debug tomorrow. And of course I'll update here as to my findings.

You can consider uBlock Origin as a replacement for Adblock Plus to see if that works better (lower memory footprint).

Yes, I use FoxClocks and see that it has caused similar problems. I have three known/possible contributors, and will begin disabling them one at a time ... I'm hoping its FoxClocks, as I do not like browsing without an ad blocker or script controls ... an update is forthcoming.

Okay, per the other question (linked above) I disabled FoxClocks and Google Maps loads without a problem. That is surprising to say the least. Didn't have any Google Maps issues with the previous releases of FF or FoxClocks. So for now, I'm going to keep FoxClocks disabled.

okay, darn ... spoke to soon ... panning and zooming initially crashed the TAB ... now it loads, stays up for about a second, and then crashes the TAB

disabled FoxClocks ... Google Map loads, but crashes the TAB, ~ 1 second. disabled AdBlock ... no change, Google Maps loads, but TAB still crashes, ~ 1 second disabled NoScripts ... again, no change, Google Map loads, but TAB still crashes, ~1 second

re-enabled all three, one at atime, Google Maps loads, but crashes after ~1 second

Mark, I had written to the developer about this -- I have his direct email address and he said he would do something shortly. He must have done something quickly. BTW, I tried to mark the relevant post as "solution" but could not find the appropriate button...

Also, to others ... I have been able to run Google Maps now, with FoxClocks enabled and running without any recurrence of the previous problem.
