It is there and sometimes I can find it. Moreover when I want to 'write' a mail, I cann give the first letter of the addressee only and have to wait about 26 seconds before the full name is shown. Only 2 names per mail are to be used and the following names are refused ans the whole closes

Think about what you may have done on your computer recently, added a program, updated, or upgraded something. Thunderbird may have been corrupted. Next time you can export your address book. Go to tools and click on export. Save the file with a name you will remember. The file extension is LDIF. You may not need it but a backup is always a good idea.
