It is not possible and advised to remove IE on Windows XP.
It is possible to do that on more recent Windows versions.

On Windows XP best that you can do is to disable the desktop shortcut and access to IE.

Hey Promizekeeper,

Are you referring to Internet Explorer? I'd just remove it completely from your computer :)

Take a look at that article from the Microsoft KB. Should give you the info you need to remove IE for good.

Hope this helps!

Thank you. I don't think that I want to remove IE completely from my PC, because (only) occasionally some lame website or application doesn't work except on IE. I just want the icon on my desktop to go away. Every time I open my desktop, it's there. I delete it and then, when the desktop is opened again, it's there. This hasn't happened before, and I don't know what's changed.

Hello Promisekeeper, Click Start > Control Panel > Double-click Display > Desktop tab > Customize Desktop > General tab > Desktop icons area > UNCHECK internet explorer > click OK to save it.

Problem solved with the following solution. Thank you.

"Another way (in Windows XP, possibly different for other versions of windows) Start -> Set Program Access and Defaults -> Add/Remove Windows Components -> Uncheck Internet Explorer -> Click Next. Now Internet Explorer has been partially uninstalled."
