When I try to open Thunderbird I get the message "Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. The old Thunderbird process must be closed to open a new window." so I go to task manager and delete the process and then I get the message "Your thunderbird profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible."

I don't know where to find that on my computer (Windows 10) and your articles tell me how to find it once you are in TBird but I can't open it to get that info. I'm not very familiar with Windows 10 - it's a new operating system for me.

I was going to try to uninstall and re-install but would really like to have my profile. I didn't "do" anything - it just started acting funny with this profile message.

profile can be located in windows by doing the following. 1. Press the windows key + R 2. type %appdata% and press enter. 3. Open the Thunderbird folder that is shown in the windows file manager window.

However, try rebooting your computer and then holding the shift key while you click to start Thunderbird. Continue in safe mode when prompted. Does Thunderbird start?

Check you software firewall. IT will be part of the "internet security suite" or anti virus and ensure Thunderbird is allowed to run and access the internet. My guess is you have just updated to V60 and your security software is actively preventing the program from executing, or you have an add-on that is doing much the same.

Thank you so much. I used the command to find the file and when the folder opened, there wasn't a Thunderbird folder. There was only one folder - nothing else. So I looked at the properties and it said folders were hidden so I unchecked that and then all the folders appeared. I don't know how that happened, but I'm glad they are no longer hidden. I was then able to open Thunderbird. I will now look up how to make a copy of the profile "just in case". Again, thank you Matt!

Have a look at the backup option included in the import export tools add-on.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/

Alternatively you could just as easily use windows backup if you have a professional version of windows. (apparently home users do not need to backup.)

Okay thank you! Will look into it immediately... :-)
