When I select multiple messages to delete or move, they usually (but not always) get opened before I can choose an action. Then I have to close all those tabs.

      • What are the keystrokes to select more messages without opening them? -- Ctrl + mouse works for selecting nonadjacent messages, and Ctrl-Shift + mouse works for selecting all between two nonadjacent messages, but I can't predict when the selected messages will get opened instead of waiting for me to choose an action.
      • It might be that my finger doesn't stay pressed hard on the Ctrl or Ctrl-Shift keys. Is it that any release of pressure instructs TBird to open the messages? If so, that seems cruelly dismissive of users with slight hand tremor. Is there a way I can turn off open-upon-release-of-key?
      • As a back-up approach, is there a single keystroke or mouse control to close all open tabs?

I think your mouse is faulty - it's sending a double-click when you click once. To see if it's the mouse and not the keyboard, try selecting a block of messages by selecting the first one, then holding Shift and pressing the up or down arrow to move to the end of the block. You might also have more success with the Select Messages column (right-click any column button to enable columns), which provides checkboxes to select messages. But try a different mouse.

To close multiple tabs, right-click a tab, Close Other Tabs.
