What is wrong with update to v. 38.5.1?
I just update my mozilla thunderbird and after the update I couldn't do a thing. Clicking on the desktop shortcut wouldn't bring up Thunderbird. After playing around with it it showed a home page with read messages, sent messages, chat, etc. but clicking on a particular item(read messages) it didn't do anything. I thought I had lost all of my email messages that were in storage. I had to right-click to open my messages so I could read my emails. I had to uninstall the update and re-install v. 38.5.1, now everything is working great again. You've got problems with that new update which I NOT going to install forever. There's problems with it. My O.S. Windows 7

The latest version is 38.6.0. https://www.mozilla.org/thunderbird/
If you have not yet reinstalled Thunderbird. Could you please try starting in safe mode (hold the shift key while starting Thunderbird)
I would like to know if your issue is better if the lightning add-on is disabled.
To; Christ1 Version 38.6.0 doesn't work for me. It won't start from the desktop shortcut and when I do get it up it shows a page with read messages, send messages, chat, etc. and none of it works to get to my emails. As far as 38.6.0 goes, I'm back to version 38.5.1 which works. I wish it would quit asking me to upgrade because I don't want something that doesn't work. It must be Microsoft trying to force Windows 10 down my throat, I don't care for Win 10. Using Windows 7 O.S.
To; Matt I reinstalled version 38.5.1 because the newer version wouldn't work. I couldn't get it started by the desktop shortcut icon. I have to right click in the start menu to get version 38.6.0 started. Once started, it just shows a page with read messages, send messages, chat, etc but none of it works when left-clicked. The only way I can see my emails is open a new window which I didn't have to do with version 38.5.1. This new version is terrible to navigate to my emails, it's got some majors problems. I'm sticking with 38.5.1 it works.
And the only way we can help you is if you upgrade to the latest version. Fixing your issue is ?I think trivial. Fixing your current issue is more than a little difficult.
Upgrade to the latest version. If it demonstrates this behaviour restart it and hold the shift key while you do so and continue in safe mode when prompted to do so. open the addon manager On the toolbar then Disable the Lighning add-on and restart. Still having issues? I expect not. This step is so I know what I think is wrong is what is wrong. Return to the add-on manager and remove lightning restart Thunderbird normally... Is everything good? reinstall lighting.
Now simply reinstalling from getthunderbird.com will also fix the issue. But I really need the feedback from the other process to take to the developers.

Quote: Working backwards: 1. The way back to 38.5.1 is easy - just download and install it. 2. The main point of Matt's writing is that your issue at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1111952 is likely different from the reporter of this topic, and that your advice (some might say fearmongering) isn't backed by a signficant amount of experience in helping users with problems. Let's get this straight here. When I upgraded to 38.6.0 I was having problems accessing my email through Thunderbird and I clicked on support and it brought me to this page. I guess it brought me to the wrong site because I'm not getting much support here. Another question, you say that all I have to do is download version 38.5.1 again to revert back to that version but do I lose all of my important emails saved from 2012,2013, 2014 2015 and so on. I don't want lose those, which would probably happen if I downloaded version 38.5.1 again. It would be like starting anew, everything that is archived would be gone, I don't want to do that.
38.5.1 is available at https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/38.5.1/win32/en-US/
Re: losing data - we wouldn't be suggesting that you can go back if we knew you would lose data, would we? The answer is no. Data and program are in separate locations
