Thunderbird "Not Responding" issue CAUSE: unknown yet
Hey Guys & Gals I have a problem with Thunderbird 38.3.0 and It started recently. I have not used thunder bird in a day or two and now when ever I open it It works for maybe 5 seconds and then freezez and I get message "Thunderbird is not responding".
Now I have not had any major updates of software but I will tell you what I did to troubleshoot.
First I disabled all security software "Malwarebytes & Kaspersky Pure 3" tried Thunderbird and it did not work as it still freezes. Next I was able to quickly start Thunderbird and click option to restart in safe mode before it froze but even in safe mode it freezes within 5 seconds. I then used msconfig and did a selective startup with everything I could disable and then ran Thunderbird. But the problem still exists and every time I run Thunderbird it Freezes and I get the message ""Thunderbird is not responding".
Thunderbird work a day or two ago so I am not sure what the heck is with it or how to fix it. Does anyone have any clue on how to fix it so it works again?
If I open it I can click on message or menu within 5 seconds before it locks up/freezes.
Is there a way to revert to last version of Thunderbird to see if it is a version issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I should note I won't upgrade Kaspersky to newer version as the newer versions conflict with several of my programs which is why I am running Kaspersky Pure 3 still. I also am running Windows 8.1 64bit if that matters.
Please help. Thanks in advance Gren

Hey Guys & Gals,
Ok here is an update after spending hours on this issue I ended up restoring Thunderbird accounts back to an old backup from 5 months ago.
Since I did that Thunderbird seems to be running fine again, thou it is still in process of downloading last 5 months of emails.
I guess I learned my lesson which is to backup mail every week or two, just in case stuff like above happens.
Thanks for all the help. Gren

Try to start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled. - Win8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode
Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode. - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode
Does the problem go away?
Hello,
Ok I did what you suggested and it did not work.
About 5 seconds after Thunderbird started in safe mode it froze and I let it sit for almost 10 minutes just thinking it was slow. But in the end I had to end process.
Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance Gren
Did you start *Windows* in safe mode?
Hello,
Yes I started in safe mode.
I went into msconfig and under boot tab I selected safe boot with network checked. I then restarted and at that point I double clicked thunderbird while holding shift, then it started and then froze about 5 seconds after first screen appeared.
Thanks in advance Gren

Has this issue crept back at all? My Thunderbird has been ruined since a recent update to 38.4.0. It freezes seconds after opening and does not come back :(
Hello,
Thanks for checking, the issue so far has not returned since all the steps I took.
Thanks for all the help. Gren
Is it still good after updating to 38.5.0? Which antivirus software are you running?
Hello,
Yes it is still working fine, thanks for the followup.
For Anitvirus I am currently running Kaspersky Pure 3. I had been on Kaspersky total 2016 but it stopped one of my most important programs from working, so i went back to Kaspersky Pure 3. I will stay on pure 3 as long as I can just to be sure my stuff stays working.
Thanks again for all the help. Gren
Have a great upcoming New Years

Mine has stopped working today about 30 mins after updating AVG.
I have uninstalled AVG and switched to AVAST instead.
BUT TB will not work more than 2-3 secs in any mode and with AVAST or not?
I have another old PC with TB and AVG ands it#s still working fine. New PC has been fine for 4-5 months though, so it aoin't the new PC!
Go to Services.msc and disable Intel Rapid Storage Technology.
