I keep getting this message on Firefox: Unable to connect

' Firefox can't establish a connection to the server www.examplewebsite.com

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
   moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
   connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.'

my other browsers (IE and Chrome) work fine. I want to use firefox as this has some useful add-ons which are not available on the other browsers.

I've checked my firewall and deleted firefox from the list of programs allowed and then added it again but this did not work. I've disabled by firewall, but firefox is still unable to connect. I've uninstalled and re-installed firefox but this also did not work. I've reset firefox to default settings and this did not work. I've also clicked the 'no proxy' in tools/options/ etc but this did not work.

Please could someone help!

After that open the start menu and type in System Restore. Click it, and hit next and select a day that Firefox was operating property. After select the day. Hit next and the computer will do the rest. Make sure you backed up your profile as Waka_Flocka_Flame has instructed.

Did you also set the Proxy settings to ‘No proxy’ when using the new profile?

Are/were the proxy settings for your other browsers also set to use the system proxy (or rather, set similar to Firefox)?

Of course, ensure you are really using the new Firefox profile after creating it.

The problem started after firefox updated itself. I've deleted firefox from the list of allowable programs and then readded it but this did not work either.

Reading this however, connection problems after updating Firefox generally do not indicate a profile or proxy settings issue, but rather some firewall issue allright. Keep in mind that disabled firewall or internet security programs (especially 3rd party) may not always get disabled in real. A reboot may be needed, or a firewall program does some nasty things to your registry and it doesn’t really update what’s needed after removing and adding back the allowed program. See Firefox does not work - Common fixes to get you back up and running, Fix problems connecting to websites after updating Firefox and How to let Firefox use the internet on your Windows computer.

Did you try reinstalling the exact previous version and check if it works out of the box (just to be sure some firewall is probably the cause)? And of course, never use 2 firewalls or a firewall and security program at the same time.

BTW, I would not recommend doing a system restore. Don’t ask why. ;)

I was having the same issue and found the fix in another thread https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-and-other-browsers-cant-load-websites

Firefox supports IPv6 by default, which may cause connection problems on certain systems. To disable IPv6 in Firefox:

In the Location bar, type about:config and press Return.
The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise! to continue to the about:config page.
In the Search field, type network.dns.disableIPv6.
In the list of preferences, double-click network.dns.disableIPv6 to set its value to true.
