There are a lot of tech support scams where you get popup alerts lying to you about your system and demanding you call a toll-free number. They can make it difficult to close the tab.

On Windows, pressing the Esc key several times quickly can break the cycle of repeated popups for the one that demands a password.

You may also see a little checkbox on an alert that says you do not want to see any more from this site. (Screenshot attached.) Checking that box before clicking OK on the alert should stop them long enough to close the tab.

Hi, Thanks for this useful info. Though shockwave is installed but I deactivated adobe flash plugins 2-3 years back following news about flash player update vulnerability. I use macbook pro. Do I still need to go to adobe site and download a plugin because I dont use it. I don't have much technical knowledge today when I saw this pop-up I was scared. I want to check whether my machine is infected or not.

Hi, I installed malwarebytes and scanned the system and found no threats but just a doubt is this software reliable because most of the times free softwares especially for macs are not good. Thanks.

I am trying to open add ons manager but cannot. the screenshot is attached.

If it's like the fake FBI/Interpol browser lock page, This add-on can stop such pages; https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/disallow-script-button/ disallow Script Button

The Disallow Script button looks like a letter "M" and the title is the Minus Script, drag and drop the button on a toolbar. If the button is not displayed then nothing operates, except rules for plugins.

Another way out of the trap is to (force it if needed) Close Firefox. Wait about 20 seconds for Firefox to finish closing. Right-click on the Firefox icon and select Open New Window.

Sometimes this works. If it opens, close it by Menu > File > Exit. This will flush out that web page from the Session Store.

Thanks everyone for taking out time and sharing much needed information. I installed malwarebytes (its recommended by apple support(I called apple supoort)). It scanned and found no threats. Regarding shockwave its disabled, however just to be feel more secure, I want to remove it and doing some google search I have found suggestions for downloading uninstaller from helpx.adobe (something like that) site. When I open that site and check the info, firfox says connection to the site is not secure so I dont trust that. If anyone can tell me method to remove that securely, it will be a great help.

It is not a security warning, it suggests that a feature used by some sites to monitor for updates in the background, or display notifications when you have left the site, is not enabled on your Firefox.
