To receive emails, I'm asked for a password--I've entered every password I know that is connected to my email accounts and provider but I'm still asked for a password. Over and over it happens. Then, all of a sudden, it works.

It 'sounds like' you eventually entered the right password. All Thunderbird does is pass the info back and forth to the server.
