my screen is 1024x768. to better fill my screen with what i'm actually interested in viewing, i often stretch the main firefox window larger than the screen. it seems plausible this may have led to the save-as dialog also being larger than the screen. now, even if i shrink the main firefox window to something tiny and locate it off in a corner of the screen, when the save-as dialog is presented, it is larger than the screen, and centered on the screen, so i can't reach it's edges to shrink it. lucky enough escape and/or enter still allow it to be functional, even tho the corresponding buttons are not visible...

Hi gregrwm, I don't know anything about Ubuntu, but I'm going to mention a trick we use on MS Windows.

While the Save As dialog is displayed, press

Alt+Spacebar

to drop a little menu from the upper left corner of the window. Then:

  • Click Size or press S
  • Press the right arrow key once to activate the right side of the dialog
  • Press the left arrow key repeatedly to bring that side toward the left
  • When it is where you want it, press Enter to end the operation

Does that work on Linux?

If not, then...

Sometimes the settings file that stores window dimensions becomes corrupted with nonsensical values. You can rename the file and have Firefox rebuild it. Here's how:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, on the Profile Folder row, click the "Open Directory" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in your file browser.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Exit/Quit
  • (menu bar) File > Exit/Quit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename xulstore.json to something like xulstoreOLD.json. If you see a file named localstore.rdf, it's ancient, you can delete it.

Start Firefox back up again and dialogs should have their default size.

That mini-reset will hide the bookmarks toolbar. You can turn it back on from the Toolbar List if you like. Either:

those sound like clever approaches. for me, the escape and enter keys are enough. i read hearty encouragement to provide feedback as a user of nightly, hence my post. dialogs larger than the screensize are somewhat less than clever!
