adding one tag mysteriously adds hundreds of others
Folks,
I'm using Thunderbird 68.10.0 on Ubuntu 20. I just started using tags, and I'm having a problem.
Basic experience:
- If I add a single tag to a single message, it works - if I select multiple messages and add a tag to all of them, life goes very weird:
- the selected messages suddenly sprout a random number of tags. They always include the tag I selected, but they also include random other tags from my list of 15-ish tags. Each message gets its own set of random-seeming tags.
- As I scroll through the inbox, I see that other messages I've tagged now have wildly different tags than they did the last time I scrolled.
- no logging messages at all appear in the error console -- no warnings, errors, nothing.
At first, when I thought it only broke the tags on the messages I had just tagged, I started removing all the wrong tags. But now that I realize it's affecting almost everything I've tagged, i'm not sure how to effectively fix those messages; it's as if, when I tag a small cluster of messages (say, 3 to 10 messages), dozens of other messages grow hundreds of other tags.
Any idea how I can make tags work correctly?
Thank you so much.

(sorry about the messed-up formatting. The stuff appearing as monospace text was supposed to be a set of indented bullets under the previous bullet.)
OK I tried using a GMX imap account by selecting a mail, holding shift and then clicking the last in the list.
I used the toolbar item to tag the emails with a custom tag.
Result was as expected. Not as you are seeing. Now I used windows, but for something as internal as a tag, I would not expect issues on another platform, but it is possible.
Have you tried restarting with addons disabled from the help menu and continuing in safe mode when prompted? I would guess you have an addon that might be doing this. Perhaps the unity integration addon or something else.
