First you need to export them from gmail. see gmail advice: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/24911?hl=en

Options: If you want to export as vcard .vcf file. Select that option and then when importing to TB choose the vcard option. I located a Youtube video on this:

If you choose to Export as outlook .csv Save .csv file to desktop.

At this point you could check the .csv file. It should open using eg: MS Excel

The link below shows the standard Thunderbird address book fields.

So you could modify the fields so it matches TB.

I think gmail has a unified name field and does not distinguish between first and last names. But Thunderbird separates first and last name. If the export as oulook.csv has already separated the unified name into separate fields then no worries. If it still shows only the unified name, suggest you create a new column for the First name and rename the Unifed name field to Last Name. Then cut first name and paste into new 'First Name' column leaving the surname in the 'Last Name' column. This will make the next stage easier.

in Thunderbird Tools > Import Select: 'Address Books' and click on 'Next' Select: 'Text file (LDIF, .tab, .csv, .txt)' and click on 'Next' Locate and select: the .csv file you downloaded and click on 'Open' Make sure First record contains field names is checked. Map the fields on the right with TB fields on left. Use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to match Mozilla Thunderbird address book fields on the left with Gmail fields on the right.
