On Windows 8.1 clicking on Tools in the menu bar opens a list of items one is called Options. When I click on Options an empty box opens. I cannot change any option. I have uninstalled Firefox 32.0.1 and reinstalled it, same problem. This is a very recent problem.

However, I have another PC running Linux Mint which uses Firefox 32.0 for Linux Mint. Here I have no problem accessing the Preferences and changing any options.

Both my PC are linked via Firefox Synch . Therefore, I believe, the Options after reinstall have been Synched to the Linux Firefox. But I cannot tell for sure.

Doe any body know how to fix that?

Did you (re)install Ghostery?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Hello, It seems that, resetting you Firefox will fix the issue The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions and some Preferences.

  • Open websites will not be saved in Firefox versions lower than 25.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Reset Firefox"Button reset. Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

I reset Firefox as you suggested and used Synch to get all my options back.

Now everything works perfectly. Many thanks.

Sorry to add to the SOLVED matter, but the solution turned out to be temporary only. When I opened Firefox next morning the problem appeared again. I have three users on this windows PC. I had to reset Firefox for all three.

There must be a more general problem that wipes off the Options context menu

Thanks for the last reply pointing me to the issue with Ghostery. Indeed enabling the add-on Ghostery seems to cause the problem.
