When the inbox is open, how not to retain links to individual messages which have been read?

To read contents of a message, I double click on the message subject line. Once read, the message then gets linked at top of the screen, these accumulate there and must eventually be closed one by one. I am pretty sure I previously had configuration where double clicking subject line to read the message contents was not necessary. I can live with the double-clicking to read but having to close each message link from the top of the screen gets tiresome b/c they accumulate there on and on. I explored the 'view' options to deal with this and tried a few, to no avail. Thank you for reading this.

You can turn the Message Pane on by pressing F8 or going to the Menu Bar and selecting View-Layout-Message Pane. Then when you single click a header to select it the message will display in the Message Pane.

After you open several messages in tabs and neglect close them, you can right click one of the message tabs and select Close Other Tabs and then use the x to close the last one. This keeps you from having to do it one at a time. Or better yet, close the message tab after you read it.
