Whenever I click on a link to a website from something other than FF, the tab that opens up is missing the little "X" that allows you to close that tab. Only way to close it is to right-click on the tab and select close. This has been happening since I updated to ver. 4. I have tried not using all of my add-ons but it doesn't seem to stop the problem from happening.

I am using Firefox 4 on WinXP and I have a tab closure X on every Tab, when there is more than one Tab open. It doesn't show on the Tab when only one Tab is open.

Try it with a new Profile.

The problem I am having is that when there are multiple tabs. Whenever I click on a link to a website outside of FF (like in an email) these will open a new tab w/o issue, but the little close "x" is missing on the new tabs. I have had several new tabs opened up from links and they all are missing this. Now what is even weirder is sometimes when I close a link with the right click menu it closes the tab but the others will sometimes restore the missing x.

So is anyone working on this?

Set the pref browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab to false on the about:config page to prevent closing the last tab from closing the browser and make a close button appear if only one tab is open.

Also look at the pref browser.tabs.closeButtons

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.
You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.

While this is a very helpful response, it doesn't address my problem. I am not sure how to describe it better, but the problem is when I click on a link in a program outside of FF.

Most times when I click on a link to a site from say my email program or a shortcut on my desktop and I already have FF running with one or more tabs already open, the new link will open just fine but the little "close" x on the tab is missing and sometimes even the ones on the open tabs have gone missing also.

I have the browser.tabs.closeButtons set to 1

OK....here are a couple of screenshots of what I am trying to describe.

The first one was when I had only this page open and I clicked on a link to a page from my email program (not website). You'll notice the little "close" x is missing from both tabs.

The second screenshot shows what happened when I clicked on a link on my favorites bar. Suddenly all the tabs have generated the little "close" x.

I hope these help try to describe what I am dealing with.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
  • Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in Safe mode:

  • Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)

OK now I feel really stupid. I had in the past stopped all of the add-ons and then one by one checked them to see if they were the cause. I did this 3 times on different days. Now today it seems that Colorfultabs may be the culprit. I have stopped this add-on twice now on different sessions and both times the tabs were generated correctly. As soon as I started Colorfultabs the problem cropped up the second time I tried to replicate the problem. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to this problem at all. Sometimes the tabs will all generate just fine no matter the link, and sometimes not.

Thanks for everyone's help. I have notified the author of Colorfultabs about this problem.

I have that too and nothings worked, i tried closing firefox and restarting the system and even typing into the location bar "I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my tab closer go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you." and that didnt work either.. all ive been able to do is the right click thingy and thats REALLY annoying
