Platform is Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon Thunderbird 115.16.0esr (64-bit) I must have caused this problem while making a mistake while adding a google gmail takeout file to local folders.

Now account settings shows Local Folders / Local Directory as:

   /home/xyz/Downloads/Google Takeout/Takeout/Mail

In Local Folders the Outbox folder properties location shows:

  mailbox:///home/xyz/Downloads/Google Takeout/Takeout/Mail/Unsent Messages

In another Linux system Thunderbird shows Local Folders / Local Directory as:

  mailbox:///home/xyz/.thunderbird/g44es9f2.default-release/Mail/Local Folders/Unsent Messages

Which tells me basically where it should be pointing.

I tried to change (in account settings) Local Folders / Local Directory using the Browse... button but the Select Local Directory window doesn't give any access to the .thunderbird folder.

How can I change the account settings Local Folders / Local Directory back to what it should be?

Thunderbird folder compacting changes old message headers which greatly increase size of incremental backups

Hi,

TL;TR. Thunderbird should not change the whole folder (e.g. Inbox) during compacting by replacing "From" with "From - Mon May 3 20:50:30 2004" and the other way round. It dramatically increases the size of incremental backups done by tools detecting only blocks of bigger files which change.

Longer version. I use Borg to backup Thunderbird profile. It supports deduplication and can incrementally backup only parts of bigger files which have changed. As I use filters to automatically move messages from Inbox to the other folders, before backup, I perform compacting of the Inbox folder to effectively remove moved messages (and those deleted manually - e.g. the biggest ones). I worked pretty fine - there were no changes detected by Borg in the old messages. Only new messages were backed up.

However, it worsen in the recent months - Borg started to detected changes also in the old messages in Inbox (after compacting performed before the every backup session). As a result, a (compressed) incremental copy takes ~1/3 of the whole Inbox (instead of some MBs). For Inbox having 5GB+, it can be a problem (e.g. when - slow - network storage is used).

I diffed the Inbox file before and after of recent compacting and Thunderbird around an upgrade to 128.x (I cannot tell exactly which minor version it was) changed the "From" line for every message from just "From" to "From - Thu Nov 14 22:32:10 2024" (a date when the compaction was performed). In older backups I see that some earlier versions of Thunderbird removed the date replacing the line with just "From".

My question. Had it been an accidental change (with removing the date) which was later reverted and there will be no more "rewriting" compacted folders? Or it's "more complicated" and people using incremental backup cannot sleep peacefully?

Marcin

P.S. Let's skip the msf files for the moment as they are much smaller.

Yesterday TB did an update and when I started the app today it was like I was using the program for the very first time. I had to re-enter my e-mail account settings, change the window layout (that took one hour) and now find a way to get my personal folders back. There are folders that I myself created and they contain saved e-mails.

Using my ISP's webmail service I can see that these folders still exist on their server. But despite all my one line research, I haven't been able to solve this problem. I did run trouble shoot, but that didn't help.

If anyone has any tips, tricks or other solutions, please let me know.

I am not sure this is really about Installation and updates, but none of the others seemed to apply.

This is the second major issue I have had since upgrading to 128esr. I am really inclined to go back to 115.

The only way to get my Calendar to display properly is to leave that tab on top when I quit, so it's on top when I launch Thunderbird. If I don't do that, I cannot get my appointments to display and I get no notifications. The Calendar is blank and stays blank, even though it claims my Home calendar is not hidden. I did try hiding it and unhiding it again, but that didn't help. I do not have any Calendar-related add-ons.

It's severely annoying. It means that if I forget to leave the Calendar on top, I have quit, re-launch, and re-log into all my e-mail accounts (I've got a bunch). Could someone please find a better solution for this?

I am using Thunderbird for Mac on a MacBook Pro, 13 inch, mid 2012 running 10.15.7 (Catalina), which is the best the thing can do. Only tell me to upgrade my hardware if you are offering to pay for it yourself.

Thank you.

Hi,

First, thank you for volunteering.

It seems that at some point my computer updated to Thunderbird 128.4.3esr. Normally, these automated updates are trouble-free, but this time, my view changed, and I can't figure out how to change it back.

Each individual message is now in its own mini-window, and takes up 4 (?) times the vertical space that it used to. The old view was much more useful to me because I could visually scan far more messages in a single pane.

I have selected view>denstiy>compact, and hamburger>view>layout>classic view, but I still have the big bubbles.

Is there a way to restore the view in which each massge took only a single line of text?

Thank You.

Hi there,

I just installed TB recently. I have configured my Gmail account to be used on TB using IMAP. I am noticing that TB is downloading all my emails from my Gmail. I do not want this. I only want to see the header of the emails, and if I click on the email, then it can download it. I don't want TB to take up a lot of space on my laptop.

Do you have any suggestions on how I can do this? If this question has been answered earlier, a link to that post will be appreciated.

I use 2 different gmail accounts for different purposes. I get mail for AccountA via IMAP on Thunderbird, no problem, and have for years. For over a year now I've been unable to collect mail for my second-string address, AccountB, on Thunderbird, and have had to get it in the browser.

I've finally decided to do something about this. I removed AccountB from Thunderbird & set it up again. I'm using the exact same settings (in Thunderbird and in Gmail) that I do for AccountA, the only difference is the password. I've double-checked the password, too. But when I try to connect, I get a pop-up:

titled: Enter credentials for AccountB@gmail.com on imap.gmail.com [a very long URL which I've copied & saved] page from Google:

400. That's an error. The server cannot process the request because it is malformed. It should not be retried. That's all we know.

Thanks a heap, guys!

Is this problem coming from Thunderbird, or from Google? What do I do now?

Thanks,

MEC

I had a gmail account, I no longer have the gmail account. I deleted the IMAP and SMTP entries. I have no CardDAV entry for that account, no calendar entry, and no chat entry (that I can see; but that old account is lurking somewhere). None of my extensions use (user-configurable) credentials.

What else is there? Is there a way that I can search Thunderbird's config for the account username?

I'm about to screenshot settings, archive this profile, and start anew. I'd really like to avoid that, because I have collected >10 email accounts over the decades and setting everything back up all at once seems a hassle.

What are next troubleshooting steps? TIA for any wisdom or guidance.

I recently installed Thunderbird on a new installation of Ubuntu 24.04 using the "Installing Thunderbird manually" instructions. Everything works fine except that Thunderbird doesn't want to use the Thunderbird icon in the dock. Thunderbird opens and runs fine when I click on the Thunderbird icon, but it then puts a new default icon on the dock that looks like a gear instead of just "using" the Thunderbird icon to indicate that the application is running. I've attached a screenshot. When I close Thunderbird, the gear icon disappears.
