Hey gang! For some reason firefox will not do anything at all unless I run it in windows 8 compatibility mode. I'm on windows 10. If I open the app it won't search anything, show any webpages, etc - but the search bar still works, it'll show me suggested sites and what have you. I can also access the settings page. Aside from that, zilch. I've done a full fresh install and it didn't fix anything. Has anybody had this before? Thanks!

Chosen solution

Here's a more general issue; I have no idea whether Compatibility mode is relevant to this one.

Sometimes program installers and uninstallers mess with certain shared Microsoft files, especially the VCRUNTIME140_1.DLL file. If Firefox can't find it where it expects to find it, it is mostly dead from the address bar down.

To rule out that issue, you can (re)run Microsoft's installer for the VC Runtime files:

(A) Open https://docs.microsoft.com/en-US/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-160#visual-studio-2015-2017-2019-and-2022

(B) In the "Visual Studio 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022" section of the article, download the installer for your system:

  • 64-bit Windows: the "X64" download
  • 32-bit Windows: the "X86" download

(C) Run that installer and restart Windows.

Any improvement?

Has it been this way for a while, or did the problem start recently?

Using Windows 8 Compatibility Mode was a workaround for when Webroot security software was tangling Firefox and making it incapable of running properly, about six weeks ago. They issued a fix for that one a while back.

I wonder whether a similar situation might be happening with your security software? Anything that sounds like "anti-exploit" occasionally conflicts with Firefox due to the way the security software wants to embed itself in browser processes and the way Firefox tries to resist that.

It just started yesterday - had been working just fine 'til then. Tried turning off my security just to see - didn't fix it. :( Real puzzle, this one!
