Why are some of my gmail emails automatically sent to trash after I open them?

After I open Thunderbird and download and open my emails, random emails automatically have been moved to trash automatically. These are not junk mail that I have deleted. They are often very important emails: online orders and official correspondence often. I can't find any settings on my computer that would be causing this, but I'm not 100% sure where to look for them either.
