Excessive use of memory (1-2GB) just getting mail, and eventually does not respond or too slow to respond. (two imap accounts, win10)

Thunderbird constantly increases its memory usage and eventually slows so much down and does not respond or too slow to respond.
That is generally happens when it passes 2GB RAM usage. Right now it is consuming more than a gig and already slowed down on responses.
How can I limit its usage of RAM? Best-

When you start Thunderbird, after using it for say half an hour, how much memory is Thunderbird using?

Unfortunately I have to say that none of the crash probably represents this problem.
What happens is it works fine till it really slows down then it does not crush but rather I have to shutdown using program manager.
Yes, you are right, possibly some of the crashes are related to addons, and probably mainly lightening or gcontact.
Yes, I have two language packs since I would like to have mother tongue as well as English.
I do operate with unified view.
I am not sure how much it would increase in normal use but this problem happens overtime, not like hours but more like days like in one-to-two days of contant running.
I notice one thing today. My friend was also using Thunderbird and checked his case. His memory usage was around 120MB and only had the local university account.
After that I unsubscribe all gmail folders.
When I checked mine was ~400MB when I did that and it has been more than 7 hours and it is around ~440 MB. It could have been ~440MB at the time and it may not have been increased. I will let it run for a day or so and see if the memory increases in time as it used to. This whole thing could be about gmail.
Is there a way to clear memory usage once every 4 hours let say rather than exiting the software and restarting?

After almost 24hrs. The memory use reached to ~800MB. I have deleted gmail imap with all the data and no change.
36hrs and 1.15GB
and I did not use the sotware, it is just running and updating email.
It is interesting that all of your crash reports show memory usage in the 2 - 3.5GB range, even though most of them are not actual out of memory crashes.
