I was trying to empty the TRASH folder but in error set the system to delete all messages over 30 days old, IDIOT. I have the old messages in a file folder as eml files but can find no info on how to send these back to thunderbird.

See the section 'Windows Mail (aka Windows Live Mail)' in this article:

The easiest way is to drag the eml files from Explorer and drop them onto a subfolder of Local Folders in TB. After that, messages can be copied or moved to other folders in TB.
