Just setting up Thunderbird for the first time. Can send emails fine. Can't receive emails. Have confirmed settings with f2s/TalkTalk and they are correct.

Where to now?

Just setting up Thunderbird for the first time. Can send emails fine. Can't receive emails. Have confirmed settings with f2s/TalkTalk and they are correct. Where to now?

Chosen solution

None of the settings I saw on their website were concerned with connection security. I'd set the POP server port to 110, and the password encryption to "none".

The password encryption setting is on the face of it a logical and sensible option, but in my experience this particular configuration option is not common. My lineone account is the only one I ever had which used it.

What are the correct settings according to TalkTalk?

more options

dashes for account name; dots for the rest POP Mail inmail.server.com port 995 SMTP outmail.server.com port 25

So I presume the outgoing setup is correct... but the incoming??

Is that the information you received from TalkTalk, or what's set up in your Thunderbird? I'd first like to see the information you received from TalkTalk. I suppose they do have a support web site, so you may check there as well.

When I originally set up Thunderbird I was getting "syntax error" when I tried to import emails.

I used the live chat option on TalkTalk. We discussed the settings I used to set up Thunderbird. (They're not much different from the settings I used to use to transfer emails from a PC to Outlook. Now I'm trying to transfer emails from my Macbook Pro to Mozilla.) So those settings I have used for Mozilla are the result of that discussion - mainly changing the POP port. He said those were the correct settings for TalkTalk.

Now I don't get the error importing, I just get ... nothing. A little bar in the bottom right hand corner looks like its Doing Something for a minute or two ... and then nothing.

The TalkTalk chap said I would need to "discuss this with Mozilla/Thunderbird support."

By the way, I'm surprised I cannot find something about this in the FAQ. I can only find help on sending emails - I don't have a problem there.

Just a thought. Have you set up this pop-account anywhere else like in your smart-phone? Is that or your old mac running? If its setup to download and NOT to keep it on the server, then there isn't anything to download, your smart-phone (whatever) has already downloaded it. I don't understand why you don't use IMAP instead as it can sync much better. see: http://community.talktalk.co.uk/t5/POP3-and-IMAP-Diagnostics/Not-receiving-emails-on-my-computer/m-p/1605097#U1605097

This is going to be messy as talktalk have grown by acquisition of smaller ISPs and has inherited a large number of disparate email services. (I still have a lineone account myself and have also had tiscali, pipex and f2s in the past.) So we may need to know what domain the OP is on.

http://help2.talktalk.co.uk/email-settings-imap-pop3 https://ttb.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1107/~/what-are-the-settings-for-my-freedom2surf-e-mail-account%3F

Having said that, I scrolled through the options and they're all plain un-secured pop (110) and imap (143). So I don't understand why the OP has been steered towards an SSL port for POP3. None of them give "inmail.server.com" etc.

To the OP: Have you tried just setting up the account as a new one, and letting Thunderbird find the settings for itself?

Do you specifically want POP instead of IMAP? Why?

Try setting your POP port to 110 and no security.

Thanks folks.

?? I don't use my 'phone for emails, so, no.

  • "If its set up to download and NOT to keep it on the server, then there isn't anything to download, your smart-phone (whatever) has already downloaded it."

I don't understand this bit. I just want to use Thunderbird as I used to use Outlook. That is, when TalkTalk tell me I have exceeded my email quota I can download the emails to my machine (a MacBook Pro).

* '"I don't understand why you don't use IMAP instead as it can sync much better."''

I don't know the difference. It worked before with Outlook. I was advised by TalkTalk to use POP. (Don't remember being given the option of IMAP.)

We were with f2s - got bought by Opal then TalkTalk.

This is my first time with Thunderbird. I downloaded and installed the programme, then followed the instructions for setting up. Plus inmail.server.com worked before and I was advised that this was correct. (btw, I presume I'm the OP??)

* "Do you specifically want POP instead of IMAP? Why? " As noted above, it worked with Outlook; I was advised that POP settings were correct.

* "Try setting your POP port to 110 and no security." Tried that. With pop 110 I get "...sending of password did not succeed. mail server responding: syntax error."

Does this give anybody any further clues?

in general you can say that mail on POP accounts are downloaded to your pc. They can also be left at the mailserver, that way filling your account. When you delete a mail it might not be deleted on the server.

IMAP on the other hand synchronize folders with you. What you do reflex on the server. Easier than pop to keep in shape. And the best to use if you have more then one download place like email-programs in pc, mac, surf-pad, smart-TV or smart-phone.

This is the settings I found on TalkTalk

IMAP (recommended)

Login / Username username@talktalk.net Incoming mail server mail.talktalk.net Incoming Port 143 Outgoing mail server smtp.talktalk.net Outgoing Port 587 Outgoing SSL No Outgoing Authentic. Yes

POP3 Login / Username username@talktalk.net Incoming mail server mail.talktalk.net Incoming Port 110 Outgoing mail server smtp.talktalk.net Outgoing Port 587 Outgoing SSL No Outgoing Authentic. Yes

Followed the links given above. For incoming email the settings are "inmail.f2s.com" (none of them give "mail.talktalk.net") and either port 143 for IMAP or 110 for POP.

Using port 110 gave the syntax error noted above. I was advised to try port 995. It gives nothing - nothing happens.

Perhaps I should just try a different programme.
