I think it must be the "Background" setting in the following dialog:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Content > "Colors" button

Does that let you choose something lighter for pages that do not set their own color?

My new laptop arrived today and it is the first time I ever see Windows 8. I experienced this problem with a black background in any Firefox page.

After a long troubleshooting process on a draconic OS I have never experienced, I found the culprit.

1. Hover your mouse (don't click) over the top-right corner (or press the Window key and the C key.) This will open the charm bar.

2. Select Settings.

3. Choose Personalize.

4. Change the background/wallpaper.

5. Enjoy your Firefox with its true colors. Hoozah!

After applying that solution, if the background of your favorite website looks a flat white, then:

1. Go to TOOLS in Firefox. Select Content. 2. Click the Colors button. 3. Enable "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above" 4. Click OK and OK. 5. Firefox will automatically display default background colors of websites.
