Deleting partial history and cookies in FF 72

more options

I am still using FF 58 because it allows me to delete recent history and cookies. For some reason, often when I reboot the computer. FF switches me to V72. and I have to go thru hell to get 58 back up and running. I love to keep my history for sites I have visited, and v58 allows me to delete everything for the day, 4 hours, 2 hours or one hour.

72 does not appear to give me that option. How can I delete only recent history and cookies, and keep the rest?

There is a time range in the "Clear Recent History" dialog. You can find that on the menu under either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Library > History
  • Library toolbar button > History
  • (menu bar) History

or use the keyboard shortcut (on Firefox for Windows: Ctrl+Shift+Delete). This is from Firefox 81.0.1:

The current releases of Firefox are:

  • Regular release: 81.0.2
  • Extended Support Release: 78.3.1esr

Was there any other reason you were delaying your update?

Thank you. Your info was exactly what I needed. I am kind of a dinosaur. I would pose one more question. I noticed in 72 that when I was looking at my saved logins, the Password showed up as dots. Is there a way around that?

I think that is normal now. Back in the days of the pop-up dialog, there was a button to show all passwords at once but the new "in tab" design doesn't allow that. It's difficult to remember back to Firefox 72 on whether there was a workaround for viewing the old pop-up style listing. It no longer exists in recent versions. However, recent versions added an export feature that allows seeing everything at once (Export login data from Firefox).

Again, thank you

Look, I am getting sick and tired of FF automatically updating me to the newest version. I will make the switch when I am ready, and when I have time to sit long enough to learn it. I wish to turn this automatic updating COMPLTETLY off. Windows updated, and now I have the newest version of ff. I want to stop this right now please.

Hi Garrysch, if you have Firefox set to inform you of updates but wait for approval to install, that usually works. However, if Firefox detects that it is extremely out of date, then it may auto-update as a failsafe. I can't recall the details on when that happens.

There is an option for enterprises that manage user updates to set a policy that blocks Firefox from checking for updates (even if you try to trigger it, it is blocked). For security reasons, this is not recommended for home users, although the mechanism can be used by anyone.
