We use Thunderbird on all our desktops and each users TB profile and storage is located on our in house Synology NAS, instead of the workstation. This allows a single point of backup for all users email, yet the flexibility to have them use POP email as needed. We "leave messages on web server" (external host) until the user pulls email from their own workstation, at which point it is removed from server.

We don't use the web server included cloud mail (Squirrel) because it just doesn't have the features or convenience of desktop Thunderbird.

I need to allow various users to open Thunderbird from various locations in house. Their workstation, a common workstation, and the conference room. This is no problem, as long as they do not have TB open on another workstation.

Previously a user had it open on their workstation, then opened again in the conference room and the mail storage got all corrupted, which brings me to the question...

Is there any way, that if TB is open already, assuming it sets a temp file or something in the mail store, that if the same user attempts to open from another work station they get an error or alert, letting them know it is locked out, or in use... etc?

Basic security would be to encourage all users to exit Thunderbird and log out of User Account when away from a computer.

I suppose you could ask your inhouse computer technician if there was a way of detecting whether a User had already logged on to their User Account (not Thunderbird) on a computer on the network by seeing if a session had been created and thus refusing concurrent sessions. So, if a session had already been created and was still in use then User could not logon to another computer. You would not want to use a script to kill an already logged on session as you would not know what was running and data loss could occur.

I heard of a product called UserLock that can limit concurrent symultaneous logins, but I have never used it nor can advocate that product. You would have to check it out to see if it offered what you are looking for.
