I have an app on my computer that periodically searches for updates for any app that I have installed. Recently, it found an update for Thunderbird (91.0.3). I currently have version 78.13.0 (32 bit) installed. Is version 91.0.3 appropriate for me to download and install?

Do what you like, but automatic updates have not been enabled for existing users at this time. As a matter of fact they may well be delayed beyond the release of V91.1 as the limited release that has occurred with new users and folks like you being prompted externally have revealed some but that the team want to get fixed before migrating everyone.
