I had to wipe my computer back to factory system (windows 7) and used the image restore to restore my thunderbird files and settings etc. However when I re-installed thunderbird I accidentally used a 3rd party website to do it and ended up with several unwanted programs on my computer plus viruses that Avast found in the Thunderbird setup files. Those were deleted and now thunderbird will not retrieve or send emails from any of the profiles I have in there.

How do I uninstall/reinstall or repair without losing my "stuff"? or do I just have to bite the bullet, remove Thunderbird and re-intall it completely and re-set up all of my user accounts and address info?

Thankyou for the information. I was not getting any error messages, Thunderbird was just not responding to anything, incoming or outgoing. After posting my problem last night I realized Avast had also stopped running. The microsoft tech that was helping me with other issues had me stop a boot-up scan after we removed viruses, so we could fix and other things on the computer and I think that made Avast get hung up because I couldn't open it to do a re-scan from the desktop. After shutting down last night the computer did another 150+ updates and this morning Avast and Thunderbird seem to be happy. I will keep the info you sent though should I have the same problem again. Thankyou for your time in responding to my problem!

First check to see if Avast is blocking Thunderbird program or blocking ports.

Depending upon what error message you get:
