I can't open pdf attachments in Windows 8 TWINUI since latest Thunderbird update

Since the latest update, when I try to open a pdf attachment using my default program (TWINUI - which I hate, but that's another story), most of the time nothing happens, it just doesn't open anything. I tried re-starting TB and even restarting my computer, and it works for one attachment, but then stops again. Very random, very frustrating.

I am guessing the helper application TWINUI is hanging in memory and not terminating so the next instance just does not work as it is still there. quite possibly related to anti virus scanning of the underlying PDF file. (I don't mean windows defender, I assume Microsoft can write a program that works with the other windows default programs.)
