The Firefox plugin checker is reporting "Update Now" for VLC media player Web Plugin 2.1.0. The 'update now' link invites me to download Plugin 2.1.2. but i already have 2.1.2 installed so the plugin checker is detecting the wrong version. I have had v2.1.2 installed since December 9th 2013 and run the plugin checker on a weekly basis so i'm not sure why it has suddenly decided that this is a vulnerable plugin.

I am running Firefox 26.0 on Windows XP

thanks ...

If in dough, or there is a problem, go to the web site of the true owner of the program and get a full install.

Doesn't solve the issue, sorry.

Hey, how are you?

I did a search and i found this old thread, see it maybe help you

It's possible that your VLC plugin version doesn't match the VLC program version since, if I remember right, every time you update the VLC Media Player, you get the option to install the Mozilla Web plugin. EDIT: I just installed VLC Media Player 2.1.2 and I DE-selected the Web plugin option. Even though the VLC Web plugin doesn't appear in my Firefox Add-ons Plugins list, the plugin file npvlc.dll is still included in the C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC folder and its version number is 2.1.0.

If you're sure that you have installed the latest version of the VLC Mozilla plugin, then you might want to add a comment to the related bug, which was just resolved as fixed a couple of days ago:

Your System Details List shows VLC media player Web Plugin 2.1.0
So either VLC didn't update their plugin version number for Firefox (we have seen this before reported) or you still have an older VLC version.

You can try to delete the pluginreg.dat file in the Firefox Profile Folder and maybe addons.sqlite as well to reset the plugin registry databases.

See Re-initializing the plugins database:

Cor-el has found the correct answer. VLC haven't updated the plugin version number for Firefox (still at 2.1.0) within their latest version (2.1.2) so Firefox plugin checker spots a mismatch. I'm sure this has happened before with a previous release.

Therefore isn't this a Firefox plugin-checker bug?

The third-party author are not obliged to change the version number of the plugin, particularly if they haven't changed any code, so shouldn't Firefox be checking my version of the plugin (2.1.0) against the latest version of the plugin (2.1.0) rather than the latest version of the software (2.1.2) ???

You asked, isn't this a Firefox plugin-checker bug?

/questions/968058 shows that this Firefox bug was filed:

Bug 905610 - VLC media player add on not reflecting correct version

I see that a new comment was added to the bug:

This bug still exists (or regressed) when upgrading from VLC 2.1.1 to 2.1.2 with Firefox 26.0 (32 bit version of both under Windows 7); the above message says reopening as verified issue, but the bug status still says VERIFIED INVALID (and won't let me fix it).

If the above bug was about Firefox showing incorrect information in the Add-ons -> Plugins list for the VLC Web plugin (npvlc.dll) then the bug was correctly marked "INVALID" as written. I think that the actual bug might have been for PluginCheck (a "Websites" bug for the plugins.mozilla.org component)

In any case, could you attach two screenshots of the following and include them in a reply? ( See How do I create a screenshot of my problem? )

I think that the PluginCheck page should be reporting that version 2.1.0 of the VLC Web Plugin is up to date, if that's the latest available version. If it's reporting that the plugin is outdated then I would call that a bug.

If there isn't any VLC plugin version 2.1.2 (if the latest version of the VLC media player Web Plugin file npvlc.dll included with VLC Media Player 2.1.2 is still at version 2.1.0) then I would add a comment to the bug I mentioned earlier, and add a link to this discussion.

Alice, I am running VLC 2.1.2 on 64-bit Windows 7 and I saw this problem today morning when I visited http://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck.

I have attached the screenshots you requested along with a couple more (one for the version of VLC that I am running and the other for the properties of npvlc.dll that ships with VLC 2.1.2).

quadrotriticale, Thanks for the screenshots.

I've "escalated" this thread to the Helpdesk so hopefully a Mozilla employee can direct this to the proper person who is responsible for PluginCheck issues.

Yes I can confirm on my machine that my plugin dll is also 2.1.0, so firefox plugin checker is checking against the latest version of the app (2.1.2) instead of the latest version of the plugin (2.1.0) and incorrectly finding a mismatch with the current version of the plugin (2.1.0)

I've added a comment to bug 939699 linking back to this thread.

richlaughlin, Thanks. You're right, the bug appears to be fixed now. I just added the VLC plugin as a test and PluginCheck now shows VLC media player Web Plugin 2.1.0 as up-to-date.
