I upgraded to Ubuntu 22.04, with the download Thunderbird Mail was also installed. It quite often freezes requiring me to shut the computer down and reboot. Also it will not allow me to send BCC mail. When it freezes, I get the option to wait or force shutdown. Any advice would be welcomed.

Rodney Jackson.

Hello Stans, thank you for your reply. I tried to follow the reply as written but hit another problem. I will try to attach the readout from the Terminal and hope you might get some ideas from all the errors I came across. <quote> rod@rod:~$ thunderbird -safe-mode [calBackendLoader] Using Thunderbird's libical backend [LDAPModuleLoader] Using LDAPDirectory.jsm [MsgSendModuleLoader] Using MessageSend.jsm [SmtpModuleLoader] Using SmtpService.jsm console.debug: "Trying to load /usr/lib/thunderbird/libotr.so" console.debug: "Trying to load libotr.so from system's standard library locations" console.debug: "Trying to load libotr.so.5 from system's standard library locations" console.debug: "Trying to load libotr.so from system's standard library locations" console.log: (new Error("Cannot load required OTR library", "resource:///modules/OTRLib.jsm", 109)) console.debug: "Successfully loaded OpenPGP library librnp.so version 0.16+git20220124.f06439f7.MZLA from /usr/lib/thunderbird/librnp.so" console.debug: "Found 0 public keys and 0 secret keys (0 protected, 0 unprotected)" console.debug: "Successfully loaded optional OpenPGP library libgpgme.so.11 from system's standard library locations" console.debug: "gpgme version: 1.16.0-unknown" IPDL protocol error: Handler returned error code!

What is the installation...flatpak, Snap, APT ?

You can get the download installation from here: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

Helpful info: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/installing-thunderbird-linux

check you have system requirements including necessary libaries installed: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/91.9.1/system-requirements/

re: new Error("Cannot load required OTR library On Linux, the distribution probably offers the libOTR library. On systems like Debian or Ubuntu, use: sudo apt-get install libotr5 https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:OTR

I have this problem, too. It started for me around Feb or March of this year. I am using Thunderbird inside a VirtualBox guest running Springdale Linux 8, which is a free rebuild of RHEL 8. I have been using Thunderbird in this way for years. I have also installed Springdale 9 in this way on several different VBox hosts, to make sure it isn't a problem with the original host. It happens on all of the systems. The Thunderbird I'm using is provided by the RPMs included with this Linux distribution, but I've also tried downloading directly from mozilla.org, and had the same exact problem.

I see errors like this in /var/log/messages when Thunderbird freezes:

When I do a stack trace, I see lots of this (not sure if this snippet will be helpful, though):

lseek(44, 392065024, SEEK_SET) = 392065024 read(44, "32)(^81^533)(^83^38C0F1)(^C0^38C"..., 4096) = 4096 lseek(44, 392056832, SEEK_SET) = 392056832 read(44, "=1)(^B4=0)(^B5=0)(^B6^22705D)\n "..., 4096) = 4096 read(44, ")(^86^38C119)(^89=1)(^96^90)(^87"..., 4096) = 4096 read(44, "32)(^81^533)(^83^38C0F1)(^C0^38C"..., 4096) = 4096 fstat(44, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0664, st_size=415913138, ...}) = 0 lseek(44, 415911936, SEEK_SET) = 415911936 read(44, "88=82014)(^A7^82)(^B0=1)(^B1^3AA"..., 4096) = 1202 lseek(44, 392065024, SEEK_SET) = 392065024 read(44, "32)(^81^533)(^83^38C0F1)(^C0^38C"..., 4096) = 4096 lseek(44, 392060928, SEEK_SET) = 392060928 read(44, ")(^86^38C119)(^89=1)(^96^90)(^87"..., 4096) = 4096 read(44, "32)(^81^533)(^83^38C0F1)(^C0^38C"..., 4096) = 4096 read(44, ")(^90=f254c)(^92^38C140)(^91=0)\n"..., 4096) = 4096 fstat(44, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0664, st_size=415913138, ...}) = 0

I didn't write the strace to a file, so I don't know what file file descriptor 44 corresponds to.

I have restarted Thunderbird in safe mode, and I'm still having this problem. I have confimed safe mode is active. These are the error messages I'm seeing in safe mode:
