have you right clicked the folder, selected properties and then the repair button. That will build a new index for the mail folders and may make messages visible.

Hi Matt, Thanks for the reply.

Have tried this a couple times and it does not change the situation.

Have rebooted the computer a few times. Ran a disk scan to look for errors.

Wondering if the inbox or inbox.inf file has been corrupted?

My other mail addresses are working fine under this thunderbird. Even the outbox is fine on the mail address that has no inbox messages.

Any other ideas for me to try?

Thanks, Joe

oops....I meant inbox.msf file in previous post.

The sudden disappearance of all old mail in a folder prior to "today" is often the result of anti virus quarantining or deleting the entire file that holds the mail.

I suggest you look in that direction through logs etc and see if your mail went missing deliberately. If it did, you might be able to restore the file (release it from quarantine) and import the mail into Thunderbird again..

Matt,

Good ideas.

Am using malware bytes anti malware....went through the logs and released files that were quarantined on 4-17. these were only identified as PUP type files.

Also running a non paid version of Avast antivirus. Let my subscription lapse.

Not sure what to look for in that program.

Will now reboot and see if there is any improvement.

thanks again

rebooted after release the Malware bytes quarantine files......no change there.

Have checked that setting (scan incoming mail) and mine was set to disabled. Am running Avast version 11.1.2253

What file(s) could be missing or corrupted to cause this problem?

Whilst the Anti-virus is usually the culprit, can you check out the following - just to rule it out.

At this point please do NOT compact the Inbox. Check the actual Inbox mbox file for emails. in Thunderbird

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • click on 'show Folder' button

a new window appears showing contents of profile folder name.

  • Close Thunderbird now - this is important.
  • click on 'Mail ' folder
  • click on pop mail account that has the issue.
  • Open the Inbox (no extension) using 'Notepad'.

The oldest email will be at the top - newest at bottom. Can you see content of emails that 'disappeared' ?

If yes, then do this: Each email will start with these lines: this is an example

  • From - Sun Dec 28 18:14:40 2014
  • X-Mozilla-Status: 0001
  • X-Mozilla-Status2: 00800000

Use 'Edit' > 'Find' Starting at the top use the look for this line: X-Mozilla-Status: 0001 you may discover there is a different number eg: 0009

Make sure each X-Mozilla-Status: has the number 0001

  • edit the number as required working down through the document for each email you need to recover.
  • Save the file.
  • delete the 'Inbox.msf' file. A new one will be auto created.
  • Restart Thunderbird.

Images below should help to show what i'm talking about.
