I installed the mac version of Firefox 36.0.4 over the old, existing Firefox 3.6.27, and none of the bookmarks or history was preserved. I then attempted to restore from one of the recent backup files within the bookmarks library window, but Firefox 36.0.4 reported the files as corrupted/unreadable. Furthermore, I attempted to import a bookmarks.html file that I had saved just prior to upgrading 36.0.4, but that had no effect. The bookmarks.html file is definitely readable and correct. It even opens as a web page within 36.0.4, but 36.0.4 refuses to import it. As a result of these problems, I was forced to use Time Machine and revert back to the v3.6.27 application. Is there a more robust way to migrate the bookmarks from 3.6.27? Thanks.

hello wupa, you can try to export your bookmarks as html file to import in a later version of the browser: Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks

Importing the HTML file that was created with Firefox 3.6 should work. If you have copied or use the places.sqlite file from that 3.6 version then there are likely problems because of the large difference between the two Firefox versions. Make sure not to start Firefox with the current release, but to use the Profile Manager to create a new profile to have a fresh start.

If you are using a places.sqlite version from Firefox 3.6 then you need to remove this file including possible sqlite-wal and sqlite-shm and possibly other places.sqlite files.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.
