Unresponsive script: chrome://browser/content/places/browser Places Views.js: 115

more options

Firefox has become very slow to load.

After about four minutes, the Firefox frame for a webpage appears. Eventually the screen for my homepage (Bing) fills the screen. I receive the following error message: "Warning: Unresponsive script: A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding....Script: chrome://browser/content/places/browser Places Views.js: 115"

Is this script connected to Bing or to Firefox?

If Firefox, how can I stop evoking this error? I uninstalled Chrome from my laptop and would strongly prefer not to use it.

I clean out my Internet cache, using CCleaner, every night. Often the files add up to 200 to 320 MB.

Win XP Pro SP3.

Thanks so much for your help.

It's a bit like turning the engine off and on again. It shouldn't change anything, but... Perhaps Firefox was trying to update something and it couldn't complete the job while Bing was displayed?? Anyway, hopefully whatever it was is done now.

A chrome:// script is an internal part of Firefox or a Firefox extension. (Firefox used the word chrome to refer to the parts of Firefox outside of the page content long before another company decided to adopt that name for its browser.)

I'm not sure what that particular stalled function is, but could you test whether you get the same error starting Firefox up with a blank page instead of your regular home page? Here's how:

With Firefox closed, go to the Start menu, Run, and paste the following and press Enter (or click the button):

firefox.exe "about:blank"

If you get the same error, then it's not caused by the Bing site.

In case one of your extensions is involved, could you test starting up in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run

After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox. Then use the "Start in Safe Mode" button.

Any difference?

Thanks for your help, jscher2000.

Both proposed solutions worked. Firefox loaded immediately and the script error message did not appear.

I then closed and reopened Firefox. My homepage, Bing, loaded immediately and, again, no script error message.

I'm not quite sure how you solved the problem. My wife calls this the "intimidation factor": a knowledgeable person just intends a solution and the computer or software fixes itself!
