firefox still hangs after renaming places.sqlite
Twice have tried the solution provided at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-hangs-or-not-responding?esab=a&as=aaq that indicates renaming the places.sqlite file should address firefox Hangs/not responding but that did not fix it. In less than 3 weeks I have had this problem recur multiple times all with the most current version of FF. Please provide suggestion of a solution that works and eliminates the problem.

Please update to the current Firefox 22.0 release.

The Firefox 17 version that you currently run is no longer supported with security updates.
- It is important to update Firefox and add-ons to the latest version to get all security fixes.
When does Firefox hang?
Is this happening randomly during a session or only after starting?
You can try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
I am using 17.07ESR because this is an business install. Everything I can see indicates that 17.07.esr IS receiving security updates as the most recent updates applied to 22.0 are also included in 17.07esr

Is that not correct?
Sorry about the confusion. I should have noticed that you are using the Firefox 17 ESR version. So that is OK.
Did you try a new profile?
I have created a new profile. I guess we will see if that does it. So I guess all the saved credentials for websites are no longer available?
Hi brokeffuser1, you can copy the password-related files to your new profile. This article describes the various files: Recover important data from an old profile.
An alternative approach might be to switch back to your legacy profile and then use the Firefox Reset feature to selectively migrate settings to a new profile. On the plus side, this saves a lot of migration work. On the minus side, it moves your legacy profile folder to the desktop under the name Old Firefox Data, so it no longer appears in the profile manager. If interested:
- Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles
- Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings - please review data migrated and not migrated before deciding
Well, it made it all of about 8 days before the same problem cropped up again. Never did reference the old profile in anyway. I guess ESR is just about EOL. :-/
