with the crazy amount of upgrades in the last few years that have steadily reduced performance and have removed features and killed addons I am now faced with not only a slow running poor quality product but I now no longer have the ability to add an icon to my favorites. I would like to know how to fix this. If not I can just go to another browser i'm just about over firefox. ver.42 latest build

I do know that the Favicon picker does not have an updated version for Firefox 42, however there are also available user styles that can be tried.

Sorry, but this particular answer - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1020869#answer-630531 - may not be useful in this situation. That thread was about bookmark folder icons, not the favicons for individual bookmarks.

The answer below the cited answer mentioned this extension - https://sites.google.com/site/sonthakit/bookmarkfaviconchanger - you could see if it works in Firefox 42.

Latest version 2.28
   Size 102,718 bytes.
   Release date 16 July 2015
Work with Firefox 4 - 39 (and possible later version)
