I updated Firefox, lost my tabs, history, bookmarks and basically all settings. It's as if I had downloaded Firefox for the first time and all records of the previous Firefox were deleted. I'm also getting a error message "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of Firefox's files is in use by another application. Some security software can cause this problem. " I have a MacBook running Mac OS X. Also my passwords are all gone and the me Booksmark Toolbar. HELP!

Chosen solution

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

If you use the Time Machine then you can try to restore and older copy of the places.sqlite file.
