cant open hyper-links in thunderbird

Just had widows 8.1 installed in my new computer. When I go to open hyper-links that I receive as e-mail in Thunderbird the little blue wheel just spins and spins and nothing happens. I can't turn off my machine with the start button (it won't stay on).
