Dear sirs, here is an example of the situation.
I have 4 tabs restored from previous session. I close FF again and open many times keeping the same tabs for many days. Then I enter a new URL in one of the tabs. How do I know what URL was there before? History does not show it, because history does not show what URLS were restored when I open FF and the URLS are not shown in "recently closed tabs".

you might have disabled the firefox history. To enable that go to options->privacy-> from drop down menu select "remember history"

You should have the previous page in the tab back history as shown if you hold down the left mouse button on the enabled Back button on the Navigation Toolbar.
You could make it a habit to close the tab and open a new tab to get an entry in recently closed tab. That will also cleanup the back history and keep the sessionstore.js file cleaner. The current Firefox release limits the back history to 10 entries as set in the browser.sessionstore.max_serialize_back pref (about:config).
Just reproduce the situation. URLs of tabs that were opened at startup are recorded in the history - as planned. But if you type another URL at one of the tabs and do not remember what page there before you will not be able to retrieve it!
The only chance to restore the URL what was there is to hit "back" (which is not convenient). But if you hit ESCAPE when you just typed in the url, "back" button will not be enabled! And if you did not wait till the previous page fully load "back" button will not be enabled, too!
So, in another words the problem is, that the URLs opened at startup do not go to history unless the page is fully loaded and it is a bug, I would suggest the developers to fix it.

Did you try to press the Ctrl+Z shortcut (Edit > Undo) to undo this clearing?
