while OAuth2 is the preferred auth for Google, it's said (in their doc) that they still support app passwords if you enable 2FA on the account.

Sorry to be dumb. I've gone to settings / general, but cannot find configuration editor or mailnews or loglevel. How do I get to these?

I asked for the configuration editor (that's a button labeled 'Config editor' at the lower end of the tab 'General' of Settings) only because I did not see your last message. So I wanted to get further debugging. But if your original problem is solved, there is no point to do that.
