A folder has been created "Archive (1)" into which lots of mail gets moved. This is NOT the "Archives" folder. This is not due to a filter I have created.
There was a similar question posted late last year, but none of the responses seemed on point for me. I have an IMAP account; it's cox email not gmail. I'm using Thunderbird. I have created some message filters but none of them send to a folder "Archive (1)"--most send to "junk" or "spam" or to a specific topic folder. I do have some thunderbird-style "Archives" which have folders with date designations--and almost no contents. I rarely use them.
Here's a thought that just occurred to me--maybe this has something to do with the mail setup on my iphone, where I can also access this account. Maybe there's some account limit thing *there* that is shoving new mail into an "archive" that it creates.
I have cleared out lots of my existing email inbox in an attempt to test this hypothesis. So this is just to suggest a possible line of inquiry.

Hi Your theory sounds possible to me. Those answers about Gmail probably said that Gmail creates its own folders for some functions, and then Thunderbird builds the same folders when it downloads from Gmail. The same applies to any online email system, that if you use IMAP and create folders at the online end by some means, those same folders should appear in Thunderbird. This can be tricky if the online (or via phone) email app creates a folder that has the same name as one already in webmail, or Thunderbird or in another mail app that accesses the same online email, like your phone. If you can access the webmail service for cox email, you may get a better idea whether that is the source of this new folder, and compare with any other email app you use. Keep digging, Agnes
