Why does Thunderbird only show my emails from 12/2016 - 12/2017 when I've had Thunderbird for 4 years or more

I installed Thunderbird on my old Laptop in 2014. Then I purchased a new laptop but I didn't install Thunderbird until last week. The Thunderbird on my new laptop is only showing emails from 12/2016 - 12/2017. I still have my old Laptop but I don't use it. Where are all of my old emails from 2014 - 2016? I thought that when I signed-in to Thunderbird on any PC all of my email messages would appear.

Have you always used IMAP connection? E.g. If you used POP3 before 2016, those emails would be no longer on the server, as by default in the case of POP3 the mails are deleted from the server after they are downloaded.
