How do I add different sites to search engines
How do I add other search engines or sites to my drop down list? When I visit a site nothing comes up in the drop down menu to 'add it' like the instructions say and you can't manage it to add. I want to add Dogpile and at the Dogpile site it says 'add to browser' but it doesn't. If I want to add cooking sites to the search engine box there is no icon to add it. I have 12 search engines to choose from, that is all.

Make sure that you allow JavaScript, javascript.enabled should be true on the about:config page.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.
You can manage search engine for address bar from the Search Bar -Check Search bar - Easily choose your favorite search engine.
You can manage everything with search engine from here.
Java says true in about:config. I just can't understand why there is not 'add search engine' when I visit a site. Add 'firefox' help comes up though, grrr. I'd like to add dogpile or epicurious or bhg and it I tried going into the files to add but they just show extensions.
OK i think i got what you want, correct me if i am wrong.
You want to add dogpile in search bar, aren't i right. But you are not able to find add dogpile in the drop down.
As far as i know the Add XXXXXXX is shown only for popular website like TechCrunch etc or websites which have their search engine listed in addons.mozilla.org.
You can check whether the search engine you are looking for is in mozilla add-on and add it.
Yes I tried adding it and went to dogpile and even there where it says 'add to browser' and I click on it. Nothing is added :( It's listed in Firefox add ons and I click the green add on box and again, nothing happens so I am guessing it's because of Firefox 24. There's always glitches with new updates. I don't know why it won't work. SO frustrating! Thanks for helping!
renascent to check whether it works i tested that on my firefox (24.0) , It worked for me I have attached the screenshot.
May be you can reset firefox or Clean reinstall it (Can give you instructions if needed)
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.
To Reset Firefox do the following:
- Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
- Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
- Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
- Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

I did what you did and nothing of dogpile showed up in the drop down menu. Your search area looks different than mine but don't think that matters. Any site I go to it should show up in the drop down and doesn't. I want to go back to 20 and see if that matters. I hate the new updates!
I just reinstalled Firefox 20 and TONS of search engines are in my drop down box now. I knew there was something off with Firefox 24. WHY wouldn't they be in the drop down in 24?
I went through all of the upgrades and none of the ones from 20 on had all my search engines. So the question is 'why' and how do I add them to the newest update. None of them have the search engine listed in the drop down box when I visit site. I will stick with 20 I guess.
Which drop-down list do you mean?
Is that the drop-down list that opens if you click the search engine icon on the Navigation Toolbar?
Try to delete the search.json file and possible search-metadata.json and search.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder to reset the search engines to the default.
Firefox will rebuild the search.json file from the default search engines in the "browser\searchplugins" folder in the Firefox program folder and the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder.
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
Yes, the one on the right with the google icon or whatever icon you have showing. I don't use Linux or Mac. Just PC with Firefox as my main browser. Not sure I understand so if you 'can' show me with a screen shot that would be greatly appreciated cor-el. :) Thank you.
I did it and reinstalled Firefox 24.0 and back to the same 10 or so Engines and none of the ones that I had installed. :(
Hey guys I solved it. I wish I had a list of all my sites to add but I added the ones I found under the search engine plug ins. I appreciate the help and still wish all my old engines followed from 20.0 to this one. :)
Have a great week!
